Overview
The department of Fixed Prosthodontic offers theoretical and practical and research education for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. The department teaches the students different topics related to fixed prosthodontics. The department emphasizes imparting comprehensive skills to undergraduate and postgraduate students. Moreover dealing with the restoration of missing teeth to restore function and esthetics.
The department combines separate undergraduate, postgraduate, clinical, and laboratory sections. The department is fully equipped to deal with basic as well as advanced treatment modalities in fixed prosthodontics including a CAD/CAM digital lab.
Goals:
- To teach students the effects of tooth loss on the oral environment.
- To allow students to diagnose, plan and perform treatment for cases, requiring crown and bridge therapy.
- To review dental material science relevant to crowns & bridges.
- To teach postgraduate students all phases of crown & bridges, including esthetic dentistry, implant prosthodontics, and functional occlusion concepts.
The Faculty of Dentistry (SCU) grants the student Bachelor's degree in Dentistry (Fixed Prosthodontic Department) specialization.
Education system:
- The academic year is only one semester and includes exams throughout the whole year where each department council outlines the exam method and implementation.
- 1st round exam (written- practical- oral) is done in all courses by the end of each academic year.
- The student is not shifted from one year to the next year only after succeeding in all courses, except for Human rights- Quality science, Computer, English language (University requirement), First Aid, and Infection control courses. In this case, the student will transfer to the next year but will not acquire a bachelor's degree, where the student must pass all previously mentioned courses. The grades are not added to the total grade or the GPA.
- Students must follow lectures and scientific lessons during the academic year. Upon the request of the department's councils, the faculty’s council deprives the student of taking the exam (totally or part of it) in case the student’s attendance for lessons and training or practical requirements is not satisfactory or less than 75%. Thus the student is failed in the exams of those courses that are deprived of.
- 2nd round exam is done in September of each year for failing students in 1st round exams and if the student didn’t take the exam without an excuse or an acceptable excuse in one or two courses. The student could not shift to a higher level only when passing the exam successfully.
- The student is allowed to take the 2nd round exam in the courses deprived of for 1st round exams of the same academic year upon the mentioned reasons in section number (4) of internal regulation.
- To acquire The Bachelor's degree, the student must pass the International Certificate Driving License of computer or its equivalence. It is one of the graduation requirements.
The programs of postgraduate research in the crown and bridges department aim to teach postgraduate students all advanced phases of crown & bridges specialty, including esthetic dentistry, digital dentistry, and implant prosthodontics. The program guarantees to study and pass specific courses evaluated by final exams.
The department offers opportunities for obtaining master's and doctorate degree in the crown and bridges field. For a master’s degree in fixed prosthodontics, the student attends lectures of basic science courses for one year and undergoes the final exam by the end of the year. Then the student registers a research topic in one of the recent research topics of Crown and Bridges specialty and must complete a master's degree thesis. The student must complete the clinical requirements proposed by the department to enter the final exam. Finally, the student is allowed to enter the second part of the exams in specialty-related courses.
It is a must to pass the exams to obtain the degree.The department emphasizes on continuous education concept for graduates, to widen their knowledge and go hand in hand with technology development. The department welcomes any graduate for further information about any recently introduced topic or material in the field of fixed prosthodontics.
